The Biden administration has plans to make all U.S airlines to refund fees if passengers’ bags are delayed. The department of transportation suggests that airlines should be ordered to refund fees if they fail to deliver the bags to passengers quickly.

According to a department official, the proposal will be issued out in the next few days and this could become effective by next summer. The proposal requires that refunds be made to passengers if U.S  airlines don’t deliver a bag within 12 hours of the passengers getting to the destination or within 25 hours after an international flight.

Existing regulations require that refunds be made only if bags get lost. Although airlines have to compensate passengers for incidental expenses incurred while they delay their bags, this new  proposal requires that a total refund must be made.

The Transportation Department revealed that in 2019, passengers paid U.S airlines a sum of $5.76 billion as regards fees on checked bags. This reduced to a sum of $2.84 billion in 2020 when the pandemic affected travel. Fees for carry-on-bags aren’t included in the figures mentioned above.
