New prostate cancer test

Korean medical researchers have developed AI-learning to design a new prostate cancer test. This test can detect cancer within 20 minutes and it is reported to have about 100% accuracy. The test which is just a urine strip can revolutionize testing. Existing methods of testing can lead to over-diagnosis.

The existing method is a prostate-specific antigen test that detects the levels of this protein in the blood. This test can have a misdiagnosis rate of about 80 percent.

Since PSA is obtained from both non-cancerous and cancerous prostate cells. If the test even tests cancerous PSA, there is a higher risk that it is detecting tumors that wouldn’t produce symptoms during a lifetime.

In addition, other conditions like an enlarged prostate, inflammation of the prostate, and an infection can also mislead a standard PSA test.  Scientists at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology designed a urine test strip that contains an electrical-signal-based ultrasensitive biosensor.

This AI utilizes an algorithm to detect if they add up to cancer or not. This procedure has a greater than 99% accuracy rate.

For patients who need surgery and/or treatments, cancer will be diagnosed with high accuracy by using urine to minimize unnecessary biopsy and treatments, which can dramatically reduce medical costs and medical staff’s fatigue.
