Scientists from Yale University have successfully repaired spinal cord injuries using the stem cells of patients. For over 50% of the patients studied, there have been improvements in functions like mobility and this was observed within some weeks of administering stem cell injection.

The researchers observed no side effects. The patients observed sustained spinal cord injuries through minor trauma and falls some weeks before the stem cells implantation. These symptoms include sensory loss, loss of coordination, organs dysfunction.

The stem cells were obtained from the bone marrow of the patient through a culture protocol. These cells were intravenously injected into patients. Scientists from Yale University, Stephen G. Waxman, and Jeffery D. Kocsis were among the authors of this study.

Waxman and Kocsis maintained that they will need further studies to confirm the findings of this preliminary. They also maintained that it could take years to achieve this. However, they remain optimistic in spite of their challenges.

Similar results with stem cells in patients with stroke increases our confidence that this approach may be clinically useful. This clinical study is the culmination of extensive preclinical laboratory work using MSCs between Yale and Sapporo colleagues over many years.
