Sadiman, who is an Indonesian eco-warrior, has transformed barren hills into green after making efforts for 24 years. With this, he has made water resources available in his residential area which is mountainous and drought-prone.
He is referred to as ‘grandpa’ or ‘mbah’, this man has worked tirelessly to plant some trees in the central Java hills. He’s doing this after fires were used to clear the land almost caused its lakes and rivers to dry up.
I thought to myself, if I don’t plant banyan trees, this area would become dry. In my experience, banyan trees and ficus trees can store a lot of water.Sadiman
Sadiman has successfully planted more than 617 acres (250 hectares) to help in preventing land erosion and retaining groundwater. Due to his efforts, there’s been formation of spring where it was once arid and barren land. Yet, at the start of his work, just a few villagers appreciated what he was doing.
People ridiculed me for bringing banyan tree seeds to the village, because they felt uneasy as they believed there are spirits in these trees.Sadiman
According to one of the villagers, Warto, some of them saw Sadiman as a madman. Warto added:
In the past people thought he was crazy, but look at the result now. He is able to provide clean water to meet the needs of the people in several villages.Warto
Sadiman gets funds for his work via plants or nursery like jackfruit and cloves, which he can barter or sell. Sadiman twinkled his eye saying that:
I hope the people here can have prosperous lives and live happily. And don’t burn the forest over and over again.Sadiman
