Political parties in Portugal have proposed laws that Cannabis be legalized for personal use. This means that the possession or consumption of marijuana plants should no longer be regarded as a criminal offense. The two political parties in Portugal, Liberal Initiative and Left Bloc presented the proposed laws.
The draft laws also proposed that the reference to marijuana should be eliminated from the tables annexed to the legal framework that applies to the use and trafficking of psychotropic and narcotics substances.
Portugal has been taking a progressive step towards drug policy. In 2001, the personal ownership of all drugs was decriminalized in the country, as part of a wider plan that concerns public health.
People who are caught with cannabis for personal consumption don’t face the risk of a jail term or criminal record. The drugs would rather be confiscated or fines might be issued.
