COVID-19 didn’t stop this nonprofit from getting food to children who need it.

Mary’s Meals is a global charity founded by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, a native of Scotland.

Before the outbreak of COVID-19, Mary’s Meals was busy working through schools across the world. From Monday to Friday, they would feed upwards of 1.6 million students at these schools.

But Mary’s Meals was hit with quite the challenge when the pandemic began. Schools began to close. This severed the connection between hungry kids and the nonprofit.

Since the United Nations warned of a “hunger pandemic” in response to the coronavirus pandemic, this was particularly concerning. David Beasley, the leader of the World Food Programme at the UN said that, in particular, “civilians living in conflict-scarred nations, including many women and children, face being pushed to the brink of starvation, with the spectre of famine a very real and dangerous possibility.”

The kids in the nineteen countries Mary’s Meals serves need food now more than ever. So, Mary’s Meals got to work to find a solution. They soon found other ways to reach the kids.

There sometimes is a very good reason to suspend schools; there can never be good reason to suspend the feeding of children.

They started connecting “with local governments and community leaders to find new ways to distribute food for the children.” Now, adult family members can “travel to schools and collect food from Mary’s Meals to bring home and cook for their families.”

Volunteers bring the food to the schools, and then locals collect it. Social distancing measures are in place for the duration of the process. Now, they are feeding as many kids as before.

MarFarlane-Barrow feels grateful for peoples’ goodness in these times:

So much of what we do depends on people’s goodness, on all those little acts of love. Whether it’s the volunteers in the developing world who are coming to collect the food each day, or people who are making donations so we can keep the child fed every day. I thank, with all my heart, every person who is doing that these days.
