NJ Representative Andy Kim Feels Honored Cleaning Up Litter Inside the Capitol At Night

As a result of an unruly mob that made the U.S. Capitol building littered with broken debris and furniture, Andy Kim, the New Jersey Representative was on his way home after participating in the vote certifying Joe Biden as the next President of the United States.

As he walked down the democratic institution halls, he noticed that some officers were assigned to clean up the mess. Immediately, he had this strong urge to join them.

Andy Kim, who represents the 3rd District of New Jersey immediately grabbed a trash bag, and despite still dressed in suit, he started picking up trash.

I think it was 1 in the morning. I noticed somebody on his hands and knees leaning under a bench to pick something up and it was Andy all by himself, just quietly removing debris and putting it in a plastic bag…. It was, for me, the most poignant moment of the long night.

Andy Kim’s credentials are great. But at midnight, in the aftermath of the unimaginable, his resume was not relevant. To him, he was just focused on making something right; something really important. This gesture was a small one, but symbolizes something much bigger.

When you see something you love that’s broken you want to fix it. I love the Capitol. I’m honored to be there. This building is extraordinary and the rotunda, in particular, is just awe-inspiring. How many countless generations have been inspired in that room? It really broke my heart and I just felt compelled to do something… What else could I do?
