A new bride donated a kidney to the ex-wife of her husband; this is an unusual story that has got one thinking about how kind some people can be. Debby Neal-Strickland had just tied the knot with her husband when she went to Florida to donate a kidney to her husband’s ex-wife, Mylaen Merthe.
Jim Strickland was once married to Mylaen Merthe, however, the duo is still friends despite divorcing each other. 59-year-old Mylean had been battling kidney disease and she became ill last year as her sickness grew worse. Mylaen started developing dark circles under her eyes and as her sickness became worse everyday, something had to be done.
In November, she was admitted to a hospital where her kidney was confirmed to be functioning at 8%. Mylaen’s brother had volunteered to donate a kidney to her but their kidneys didn’t match. Not long after, Jim’s new bride offered to donate hers.
Jim and Mylaen divorced about 20 years ago, but they were still friends as both raised their two children. Jim met Debby and they both fell in love. Debby and Mylaen had always met at family gatherings; both the two women were friendly, although not close.
Mylaen’s daughter was pregnant and this was going to be her first time being a grandmother. Debby knew this and wanted Mylaen to become a grandmother.
Debby and Jim are used to giving and this is what they do. They are currently raising six children at their home. Some of these kids are Debby’s grandchildren while some are their foster children. Debby was inspired to help Mylaen as someone in her family had also gone through the journey of waiting for a donor without getting one. Debby’s brother died of cystic fibrosis when he couldn’t get a double lung transplant.
