$20M for scholarships

A man donates $20M for scholarships to help students who are in need. Calvin Tyler couldn’t afford to pay his education bills when he was a student due to his financial problems. It is no doubt this has been the story of many people.

Calvin Tyler had to abandon his college dreams 60 years ago when tuition was very high. Tyler enrolled in Morgan State College to study business administration in 1961. When he couldn’t continue to pay his tuition fee in 1963, he had to be a UPS driver.

Although he didn’t have a college diploma, this didn’t stop this UPS driver from becoming a great person. Tyler retired as the U.S Operations’ Senior Vice President and was among the board of directors in UPS.

Tyler’s dedication to hard work paid off at the end of the day and he remembered that what happened to him was an exception. In a way to give back to society, Tyler and his wife set up the Calvin and Tina Tyler Endowed Scholarship Fund.

He granted full-tuition scholarships to Baltimore students who have financial challenges. Tyler increased the fund he had always donated in 2016. In 2021, they pledged a grant of $20M for scholarships. According to Tyler, he and his wife had to do this when they thought about how the pandemic had really affected students who were struggling to make ends meet and assist themselves.

This is why we are increasing our commitment. We want to have more full-tuition scholarships offered to young people so that they can graduate from college and enter the next stage of their life debt-free.
