A South Carolina man learned and mastered cooking skills just by watching some YouTube videos, and now he has opened his restaurant and is now boss to 60 people.

The man, Octavius “Tay” Nelson washed dishes in restaurants while growing up, where his father also worked as a cook. He was there to see the joy and smiles brought to the faces of people outside their family who happened to taste his father’s food.

After his father and brother died, Nelson decided to honor them by going into food making. But there is an issue – Nelson had no cooking skills. Brilliant of him though, as he turned to YouTube to watch different “how to” videos to gain the necessary kitchen skills.

I watched every video I could find; In that way I learned everything from how to cook different types of meat to business-related tips on how to run a restaurant.

Octavius tells GNN

At the end of the day, Nelson, with inspiration from his father’s recipes decided to launch a line of all-natural seasonings; however, his major goal was to establish a restaurant. This he achieved by using YouTube to search for everything necessary relating to having and running a food business.

Through the skills learned on YouTube, this man started a catering business. This dream of opening a restaurant was finally realized in 2018. He named it Bobby’s BBQ after his dad and brother and has given jobs to some people in his community, with over 35,000 people already tasting his barbecue rubbed with house-made seasonings.

We are incredibly grateful that we’ve managed to keep our doors open through this pandemic, so we can continue to have a positive impact on our community, as well as keeping our staff employed.
