Mary Emerson, a professional nutritionist who works at the school, recalls several times when she noticed that students didn’t eat in the cafeteria. These students have disclosed that their family can’t provide them with meals.

A good example of this is the issue of food insecurity students battle with. Food insecurity has become worse over time, especially during the pandemic. However, some states like Maine, are taking some steps to tackle this problem.
The federal government has provided free lunch and breakfast to all students for the past one year. It promises to continue with this through 2021-2022. This decision has shown why it is important to offer free meals to all students and not only students that meet the requirements for income eligibility.
California and Maine are the first two states that have decided to provide free meals for students. Providing free meals for all students can be a way of increasing access to healthy foods for several children in Maine. The Maine Department of Education revealed that almost 38% of students are eligible for free food.
