A Gardener known as Douglas Smith spent about two months growing Britian’s biggest tomato, which is six regular beef steak tomatoes fused into one.
This big fruit had to be suspended with the use of a pair of tights to avoid it falling off its stem. The tomato weighed 3.106kg and was measured 27.5 inches in circumference.
The tomato was grown from a variety of seed known as Big Zac. Douglas’s large fruit has given him an edge over Peter Glazebrook, the previous UK- record holder who grew a tomato that weighed 2.9kg last year.
Giant tomatoes have been my main focus in terms of competitive vegetable growing… my attempts have been just shy of [Glazebrook’s] each time. But this time, I’ve finally edged it.Douglas said,
When Douglas was asked how he did it, he said that he got seeds from Larry Hill, popular tomato grower Larry Hill in the US, who got the seed from his own 3.47kg tomato plant.

Douglas cut back flowers on the plant so that they could all grow into one mega shoot. He watered his tomato using water mixed with a bit liquid seaweed at least once daily for two months. He also maintained that the plant was given a ‘weekly compost tea feed.’
You’ve also got to keep the tomato shaded. Covering it with a dishcloth will do—as this keeps the skin more supple so it can grow.Gardener Douglas
The seeds from this giant tomato will be kept to grow other tomatoes of this size. When Douglas was asked what would happen to the giant tomato, he said it will be sent to Churchgate Sausages in Harlow, Essex, it will be used as tomato and basil sausages.
