Nine dogs for comfort have been brought in from different states to help rescue workers in South Florida with mental health.
These golden retrievers have some similarities with the therapy dogs of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, which have been on site. These dogs have just one responsibility – to assist rescuers to cope with the extreme emotional toll the collapse has brought.
Bonnie Fear, who is with the Lutheran Church Comfort Dog Ministry, said that:
These dogs are here for you. A lot of times they come up, they’ll fall to their knees, they’ll start crying or they’ll smile. We try not to say anything, we let the dog be the bridge for those people to grieve the loss, whatever they’re feeling.Bonnie Fear
These comfort dogs are currently residing in North Miami’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church, waiting to be brought to the Surfside site.
