19-year-old Mayana, and her Father, Yosef Lifchitz, started “Books 4 Cause” back in 2009 after they noticed some book disposals after just one year of use.
Since then, so many books (hundreds of thousands) have been donated to this case, which has now filled 110 African libraries. But when the United States was hit by the Coronavirus pandemic, they knew they had to grow here as well.
This father decided to open a library on North Milwaukee Avenue, Avondale with 1000 books, and all of them completely free. The Library opens Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
What reading does is provide education. That education lengthens lives.Yosef Lifchitz
It might seem really simple, but the escapism it provides is incredible. You can really turn someone’s life around just by giving them a free book.Mayana Lifchitz
With set plans to set up other free libraries to be located in the Western and Southern parts of Chicago, Books 4 Cause is also doing well to fill the empty storefronts that have been negatively affected by the pandemic.
We can pop in for a week and if you need us to leave to rent the space, we’ll be out. All books have an opportunity to be in someone’s hand.Lifchitz
