Nitric oxide is a compound naturally produced by the body that consists of antiviral properties. Researchers found out that when the levels of nitric oxide in the lungs are boosted, this can help treat COVID-19.

To our knowledge, nitric oxide is the only substance shown so far to have a direct effect on SARS-CoV-2 [the virus behind the current pandemic.

Although vaccines that can prevent people from contracting the virus in the first place are available, there is no effective cure for people who contract COVID-19. This is really a concern for the world.

The main emphasis in the treatments tested only reveals that they relieve symptoms. This can help to reduce hospital stays and reduce mortality in the long run. However, there is no possible proof that any of these treatments have a significant impact on the actual virus behind the infection.

The functions of nitric oxide include controlling various organs by acting as a hormone. It also regulates pressure in the blood flow and blood vessels between and within organs. This compound can be administered in cases of acute lung failure. It can be taken as inhaled gas in a low amount to help boost the level of blood oxygen saturation.

This exact therapy was carried out during the SARS coronavirus epidemic of 2003 and it was successful. One of the major reasons it came out successful was that the patient experienced a decrease in the inflammation of his lungs. Nitric oxide acts as an antiviral and antibacterial and as such, offers protection against infections. This therapy was tried out with success.

Their study tries to discover the coronavirus that resulted in the first SARS epidemic. Nitric oxide  S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine had a distinct antiviral effect in 2003. The research group now plans to investigate the antiviral impacts of nitric oxide released in gas form. The researchers will have to create a model in the laboratory to simulate a conceivable form of therapy for patients.
