Since age 13, Keith Walker has been a homeless man. The only constant thing in the life of this 53-year-old is his dog, Bravo. Not sure of his own circumstances, to ensure he is kept safe, Walker made an arrangement with W-Underdogs founder, Gracie Hamlin to allow Bravo stay spend his nights at the facility.
As Walker came around on 18th December to take Bravo for a walk, he discovered that the shelter has been engulfed with fire. Immediately, Walker rushed in to help the animals.
In an interview with CNN, he said:
I was nervous as hell, I’m not going to lie. I was really scared to go in there with all that smoke. But God put me there to save those animals. If you love a dog, you can love anyone in the world. My dog is my best friend, and I wouldn’t be here without him, so I knew I had to save all those other dogs.Walker
Hamlin revealed that the firefighters present at the scene had called animal control to do something about saving the furry residents of the home, but as the fire grew stronger, Walker just couldn’t wait anymore. He went ahead to pull all the animals—10 cats and six dogs—and saved them.
He is my guardian angel…I can’t thank him enough for saving my animals. I’m still in disbelief… I’ve been around a fire and I know how fast they flare up.Hamlin
As Walker’s bravery became well-known, someone launched a GoFundMe campaign ensure a better life for the homeless man and his dog, Bravo.
A donor of $50 to this campaign commented:
…Mr. Walker, you’re an extraordinary gentleman, risking life and limb to save not only dogs, but the cats in the shelter as well, which would have been far more difficult. I can’t wait to see you on the news in a fresh apartment with a new start. You’ve earned it, man.A donor
