19 families have come together and put their resources to purchase a community safe and thriving for black people.  Ashley Scott, a real estate agent purchased the land together with a group of 19 black families.

The purchased land is located at East of Macon in rural Wilkinson County, Georgia. At first, Scott and her friend, Renee Walters, didn’t plan to purchase a large plot of land, but they had the vision to create a haven for their Black families.

I’m hoping that it will be a thriving haven for people of color, for Black families in particular. Being able to create a community that is thriving, that is safe, that has agriculture and commercial businesses that are supporting one another and that dollars circulating in our community that is our vision.

A safe community

Following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, there was unrest in the country.  The death of Ahmaud Arbery while jogging in Georgia,  triggered the women’s zeal to search for a new community that they could start themselves.

Scott and Walters reached out to other black families to see who might have an interest in joining their effort. They finally created the Freedom Georgia Initiative to spearhead the purchase. They plan to turn the newly-purchased land into a new Black city, called Freedom, Georgia.

Reene Walters saw an ad that had been online publicizing the sale of Toomsboro’s town. This advert went viral eventually.

Scott said she got a call when Reene Walters caught wind of the sale. Reene asked Scott if she saw the article about Toomsboro for sale. They could purchase a whole town for $1.7 million, a price for a small condo.

It is one of the few places where you can buy a whole town with every kind of building including a historic inn, a syrup mill, an opera house, a schoolhouse, a railroad depot, a cotton warehouse, a restaurant, a barbershop, a water wheel, a grist mill, a workshop, a filling station, and several houses.
